Giver’s Gain

A lot of successful people believe that because someone aided them in the past it is their duty to do the same for others now and in the future. In cases like these, an Alliance Partner wants nothing in return. The reward is the warm feeling he or she gets from offering assistance.

For example, my client Tim wanted to learn more about what it really takes to open a Starbucks franchise. He asked the owner of a successful Starbucks if he could interview her for half an hour. She said she would be honored to share her knowledge. She even referred Tim to two other Starbucks owners who ran profitable businesses. Tim learned the priceless secrets of three experienced “masters” just by asking.

I’ve found that most people are glad to lend a hand as long as it doesn’t severely infringe on their time or impact negatively on their reputation in some way.

Remember: Even if you don’t think you have something to offer the person you are asking, don’t let that put you off. Likely your assets will fulfill someone else’s need down the road. It’s kind of a karma thing. What comes around goes around.
